Evenings in Beyoğlu: Where, When and Why

Istanbul's nightlife is not one thing. Within the same half-kilometre you can find a loud bar street, a quiet meyhane, a hall with live fasıl music and a club that runs until morning. This guide is about telling those apart and putting your evening in the right place.

Types of venue: know what you are choosing

There are four main ways to spend an evening out in Istanbul, and confusing the names is how people end up in the wrong one.

The most common mistake among these four is looking for a meyhane and ending up on a bar street. We explain how a meyhane actually works in our guide to what a meyhane is.

How the hours work

Dinner starts late in Turkey. Sitting down around eight is early; between nine and ten is normal. Once a meyhane table is set it lasts two to four hours, so a table that sits at nine comfortably runs to midnight.

Bars and clubs take over after that. The classic Beyoğlu sequence is: the table at nine, a move to a bar towards midnight, and whatever you like afterwards. Doing it the other way round means missing dinner — most meyhane kitchens close around midnight.

One practical note: shops do not sell alcohol for takeaway after 22:00. This does not apply to licensed venues, however; meyhanes, bars and restaurants keep serving as normal. So there is no need to run to a shop — you simply keep drinking where you are sitting.

Frequently asked questions

What time do people eat dinner in Istanbul?

Usually around nine in the evening. Eight is considered early; between nine and ten is the busiest stretch. Since a meyhane table lasts two to four hours, a group that sits at nine will still be there at midnight.

Is alcohol available in Istanbul?

Yes — licensed restaurants, meyhanes and bars serve alcohol. The only restriction is on retail: shops do not sell alcohol after 22:00. That rule does not affect licensed venues, where service continues as normal.

Should I choose a meyhane or a bar?

If you want the evening built on food and conversation, a meyhane; if you want to be on your feet with loud music, a bar. The classic way to combine them is to take the meyhane table first and move to a bar towards midnight — the other way round, the kitchens will have closed.

Is Beyoğlu safe at night?

Generally yes; the area stays lively and busy until late. Ordinary big-city awareness is enough: avoid places that call you in from the door, agree prices before sitting down, and ask for an itemised bill.
